Adsense secrets, tips and tricks
A collection of the best adsense secrets, tips and tricks from all over the web.
We've all been there, searched google for 'adsense' and seen the amount of money some web entrepreneurs are currently making. I too am one of them, so I began searching the web for the best adsense tricks, tips and secrets to find out how to use adsense in the most productive ways. Note that this guide is aimed at the beginner to the intermediate adsense user.
So why use adsense?
Well, adsense is a simple and effective way of earning revenue through your site no matter how large or small. Ads are also unintrusive, they are small lines of text or images opposed to other kinds of advertising such as pop-ups, pop-outs and floating adverts. Adsense adverts are completely customisable to match your content.
All adverts are provided by google through their Adwords program, so you do not need to go through the hastle of finding advertisers who are willing to pay you to show their product, there is also not a minimum on the number of visitors you need before using adsense.
Google scans the content on your page in order to make sure adverts are targeted towards the people who are most likely to be interested.
Okay, adsense is the way, now which size adsense banners should I use?
The kind people over at Google have provided a list of their best performing adsense banner sizes and they are as follows:
336x280 Large Rectangle
300x250 Medium Rectangle
160x600 Wide Skyscraper
They also note that taller adverts usually outperform wider adverts, this is due to them being easier to read and as they go down the page, the reader is looking at the advert for longer as he/she views content. They also note that you should always choose the advert which best compliments your content and layout.
Right, tall adverts usually work better than wider adverts, what about colour?
This is a tricky one, it has been proven that you should try and use colours which compliment or blend in with your layout, the majority of internet users have become subconciously immune to advertising, so if you want people to click the links you need them to at least give it a second look before the subconcious has time to kick in!
A well blended adsense advertisement Google gives the image on the left as a good example of how to blend your advert with your content.
Google gives this advice to adsense customers:
- To blend, make the background and borders of your ads the same colour as the background of your page where the ad is placed. If your site has a white background and you do not want to spend a lot of time choosing ad colours, we recommend using our pre-designed Open Air palette.
- To complement, use colours that already exist on your site, but do not match the background and borders exactly where the ads are placed.
- To contrast, choose colours that stand out against the background of your site. Contrasting is recommended only for sites with dark background, so we suggest using a palette with white background, white borders and blue titles.
Is there anything else I need to know?

Heatmap provided by Google
Placement of the ads is very important, Google provides the heatmap on the left on their adsense support FAQ, it shows the ad placements that have been most and least successful. The map is by no means a be all and end all but be advised that it has been proven through many different types of advertising that the eye's main focus goes from the top left to the bottom right in a diagnal line therefore adverts in the top right and bottom left will prove to be the least successful.
Wow, sounds great! How do I get started?
That's another great thing about adsense; it's so easy to set up! Simply go to google.com/adsense and sign up! Provided the content on your site is original you are almost guarenteed to be accepted!
That's all for now, enjoy your Adsense success! :)
